    “The Louisiana Connection” – In this episode of Wisconsin Foodie they travel the Mississippi to examine the effects of farming runoff on fisheries in the Bayou. Margaret Krome of the Michael Fields Institute has been rallying Wisconsin farmers to rethink farming practices to be more conscious of runoff. The goal is to bring the fisherman of Louisiana together with Wisconsin farmers over food, bringing fresh farmed foods of the north and wild caught foods of the south together for an epic feast.

    The fifth annual Wisconsin Cover Crop Conference “Investing in Your Farm’s Future” will be held February 27th at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center, Stevens Point.

    Barry Fisher, Central Region Leader of the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Soil Health Division will deliver the keynote address “Soil Health Principles: Using cover crops and reduced tillage to improve your crop rotation”. Fisher has extensive knowledge of soil health principles, 32-years’ experience helping farmers implement conservation practices to improve soil health and is himself a no-till farmer who uses cover crops.

    Other topics include cover crops for Wisconsin grain and livestock systems, risk management/ soil health economics, planter set-up for no-till and cover crops, cover crop basics, advanced cover cropping-seeding into standing crops and standing covers, and cover crop do’s and don’ts. Many of the presenters are Wisconsin grain and livestock farmers speaking from experience about what has worked and hasn’t worked in their Wisconsin cropping systems.

    There will be something for everyone, from farmer’s that have never tried cover crops to veteran cover croppers. The conference also has a trade show where participants and interact with industry representatives.

    Preregistration is required and an “early bird” discount is available. The cost of the conference is $40 through February 14th, $50 afterward and includes lunch and all materials. Five continuing education credits in crop and soil/ water management have been applied for. For more information and to register, go to the Cover Crops in Wisconsin website.

    This conference is a joint effort of the Michael Fields Institute, University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Wisconsin Natural Resources Conservation Service.
