GULFS helps with Mellowhood Hots Initiative
January 9, 2019
This Fall, Michael Fields continued a partnership with the Mellowhood Foundation, a youth-led community based organization on the SW side of Madison. After a successful summer of programming, thanks to a collaborative SEED grant from the City of Madison, the Mellowhood Foundation expressed interest in continuing their development of the youth-led hot pickle business GULFS supported through the summer. Five youth were selected and met every Saturday with GULFS facilitator Devon Hamilton to further develop their initiative. Through newly devised lessons and content, GULFS helped the youth actualize their vision for their initiative through inviting guest community leaders to help support their work, helping them identify and modify hot, mild, and sweet pickle recipes, and further develop their values and story behind their initiative through a deeper understanding of the food system. The fall initiative culminated this December, where we were invited to share our work and receive community feedback at the Badger Rock Community Market. The product was well received, and the youth were incredibly proud of their hard work and excited to gain insight from the dozens of community members who they interacted with that day. We are looking forward to continuing our support of the youth’s work this spring and hope to see Mellowhood Hots at a market near you soon!
