National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition meets in Wisconsin
August 11, 2017
Over 120 members of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition came to the lovely city of Madison in the lovely state of Wisconsin for its 2017 Summer Meeting, August 6-9. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is an alliance of grassroots organizations that advocates for federal policy reform to advance the sustainability of agriculture, food systems, natural resources, and rural communities.
Michael Fields has been an active member of NSAC since its founding thirty years ago, and we had the pleasure of working with other Wisconsin NSAC members to co-host this meeting – including the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship Program, GrassWorks, Inc, Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Services (MOSES), Organic Valley, and UW-Madison’s Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems.
Meetings started early and went late as participants tightened policies to advance in the upcoming Farm Bill and in the Fiscal Year 2018 Appropriations campaign. But we also toured two local farms, had dinner at the West Madison Research Station and enjoyed beer and snacks on the UW-Madison’s Memorial Union Terrace. Not only did this powerful group develop more proposals to add to its remarkable track record of policy accomplishments, but we may have converted more people to move to Wisconsin!
