Senate Farm Bill Update

On Wednesday, June 13, the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee voted out of Committee with almost unanimous support its version of the 2018 Farm Bill. The bill doesn’t accomplish everything we would have liked, but it’s a dramatic improvement over the cynical House bill on virtually every front, from beginning farmer provisions to conservation, crop insurance, research, local foods, and more. As the bill moves to the Senate Floor, the Institute will be working with the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and its other partners to advance the strongest possible bill quickly, in order to have a new Farm Bill in place before the current bill expires on September 30 of this year. Such an expiration would put into jeopardy many programs and policies that we have worked hard to include.
