"Science & Civics: GMOs & Wisconsin" Panel Discussion

    12:00 pm-2:00 pm
    07-24-2017

Monday, July 24, 2017, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

    Discovery Building
    330 North Orchard Street
    Madison, WI 53715

There is an impassioned public controversy surrounding GMOs—and much confusion. The topic is especially relevant in Wisconsin, with UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences scientists working at the forefront of GMO-related research, agriculture and the life science industries having invested heavily in the technology, and new developments affecting numerous stakeholders in agriculture, business, and the public sector. However, discussions about GE crops need to move past broad pro/con statements and address the complexities of this fast-evolving field.

During this event, we will hear from expert panelists covering a range of perspectives related to this issue. We aim to increase understanding and collaboration around both the science and civic dimensions of the issue within the context of Wisconsin.

    Panelists include:
Jim Holte, President, Wisconsin Farm Bureau
Monique Liston, Graduate Student, Urban Education, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee
Margaret Krome, Policy Director, Michael Fields Agriculture Institute
John Mesko, Executive Director, Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Service
Richard Amasino, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), University of Wisconsin – Madison
Dietram Scheufele, John E. Ross Chair in Science Communication in the Department of Life Sciences Communication, CALS, University of Wisconsin–Madison
Kim Bremmer, Motivational Agriculture Speaker, Ag Inspirations

This event is part of the Science & Civics initiative, based on the premise that there is a dangerous gap in both civic literacy and scientific literacy in the United States. We see these two trends as connected, and believe addressing them together is vital to cultivating a citizenry capable of informed self-government. We recently launched a new report in partnership with some of the country’s leading practitioners and communicators of both civics and science: “Science & Civics: A Guide for Collaborative Action.” Now, we are hosting local public events in communities around the United States in order to share these ideas and bring them into local practice.
