While Wisconsin has yet to financially support Farm to School programs, some schools in the state may get assistance through the federal Farm to School Grant program.  The grants will range in size from $20,000 to $100,000 and can be for planning a Farm to School program or expanding an existing program.  Proposals are due June 15th.

Overall, $3.5 million in new funding will be available to help local school districts organize and implement new Farm to School programs.  Many groups across the country, including Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, advocated for this program that will educate children about where their food comes from, improve the quality of school meals, and create new markets for local food producers.

These nationally competitive grants will give priority to schools serving a high proportion of children who are eligible for free or reduced price meals.  At least 25 percent in matching funds are required, and applicants are encouraged to “cluster” applications where they would impact a wider area.
