MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers, together with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), announced $1 million will in awards to 49 farmer-led groups through the Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grant (PLWPG) Program. The Iowa County Uplands Watershed Group has been awarded new funding to expand its efforts in soil and water conservation. This investment will help support on-farm conservation practices that improve water infiltration, reduce runoff, and improve soil health across the region.
This funding comes at a critical time, as farmers and landowners in southwestern Wisconsin’s Driftless region face increasing challenges from erosion, nutrient loss, and extreme weather events.
Since 2016, the Iowa County Uplands Watershed Group has worked to address these issues through farmer-led conservation initiatives, encouraging practical, research-backed solutions that benefit both the environment and agricultural productivity.
With this funding, the group will expand the use of cover crops, no-till practices, pasture restoration, and stream buffers—proven conservation methods that reduce soil erosion, improve nutrient management, and protect local waterways.
