Director’s Final Salute to Founder and Friend
Johanna Martina Mann, one of the three original founders of Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, passed away on April 1st, 2014 while at the Mann’s winter home in Überlingen, Germany. The Michael Fields Agricultural Institute grew out of a dream Martina had to own land in America and to use that land to bring forth education on the importance of wholesome food based on good soil and sustainable agriculture. She and her husband Christopher co-founded Michael Fields Agricultural Institute and opened Nokomis Bakery.
Passionate Supporters Ensure Sustainable Ag Funding Wins
For nearly twenty years, Michael Fields Agricultural institute has been an active player in the process of seeking funding for federal programs that support sustainable agriculture. Once, two national policy groups merged in 2009 to form the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition — MFAI applied that experience to helping NSAC coordinate its grassroots appropriations campaign, working with the best policy and grassroots leaders around the nation and in NSAC’s Washington, D.C. office.
