Michael Fields Agricultural Institute Celebrates Local Grains at Farm Aid 2023

September 23, 2023 – Noblesville, IN

Michael Fields Agricultural Institute team traveled to the Hoosier State to join farmers, eaters, advocates – and Willie Nelson & Family, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, Margo Price, and John Mellencamp in his home to state, to celebrate and support sustainable agriculture at the 38th annual Farm Aid Festival! We joined festival goers in the Homegrown Skills tent to showcase our organizational work – walking through the recipe of a pancake and how the intersection of our work on policy, research and farmer education all play an integral role in making local staple crops available in a regional resilient food system. We at MFAI work together to support the adaption and evolution of Midwest field crop systems because of the potential and critical role they can hold in our agricultural systems and for farm communities. Not only do grains diversify our landscape, but they can also act as a cover crop, or a living cover, – and if done with minimal soil disturbance or chemical application, offering remediation to the soil, our waterways and potentially, access to locally culinary grain crops. Culminating in a pancake flipping competition, with flapjacks skimming the top of the tent, we returned to East Troy, WI, full of pride (and pancake proud!) for the multifaceted work our organization is accomplishing together and for Midwest communities.
